On the way to Spain

I’ve went today to Utrecht to make me ready for the World Youth Days in Madrid. We went with our subgroup from Veenendaal / Ede-Wageningen to Utrecht Central Station. First we’d a launch mass in the Saint Catharina Cathedral in Utrecht. We have placed our bags in the day chapel. Then we have a mass and we get the travel blessing from Mr. van Eijk.

After the mass we packed our bags and walked to the bus. We but our bags in the bus en wen to Spain. In Breda we get food for that evening and the next morning.

Future John Doe

Good question…How do I see the future. Well, I will be honest with you, the economic crisis and stuff like that hasn’t made the answer to this question an easy one. Right now I think there is a battle brewing between business oriented ideology and older more settled ideologies. I would like to think that this little battle will not boil into things like it did in the past, with the upcoming of nazism and communism, which were repressive systems.  Because I got a credit in my country and because I have been working with banks I can say for sure that the immediate danger surrounding the normal working man is becoming a sort of zombi or slave in this society based on consumption and crediting. I am very inclined to think that if people don’t do something about this situation with the banks and the big corporations they will eventually own us because of debts and so on.

So I see on the horizon a sort of storm much as it was more than 50 years ago. Evil has a very good ability to change faces, so if 50 years ago it was racism and the urge to conquer countries by force, nowadays the approach is different but the result is still suffering and hunger for some and wealth and power to a few. The present danger is even more great because it rests on the awareness of the individual regarding the system that he is in and most don’t have a clue about economic things and how things tend to turn out in the long run. The truth is that most people, given this present situation, will not be able to pay their credits to the banks, so what will happen then?

As we can see the answers are not so straight forward but a big constant emerges from all these issues. Where the system is not there to support the ordinary person, there will be suffering and systems like this also have a habit to become repressive. We only have to look at south America or Eastern Europe for example to see how bad democracy can still be very painful for ordinary people.  People will have to become aware and not descend into this kind of lethargy that will only bring him bad things. There was a saying which I like very much “The only thing necessary for evil to prevail is for good men to do nothing”, and I like it because it fits very well with today society.

Corporations and big companies managed through commercials and this spirit of consuming to place us in a position often at home in front of the TV with fast food by our bed thinking of nothing, just receiving this junk information like what I should wear tomorrow so I can sell this or impress in that way. During this process, robbing us of our identity, our ability and our will to be truly free. Nowadays everyone owns someone or a bank, everybody has worries about stock, about the markets. If somebody goes bankrupt in America, I lose my home in a couple of months and stuff like that.

Another big issue for the future is the faith of our planet as a living system. The destructive way that our present system works is not sustainable and I quote another smart person “A person who thinks that you can have unlimited growth in a world with limited resources is either a madman or an economist.” People nowadays tell us that we must have growth. I often ask myself what would happen if this bad growth stops what will happen… the world will end? Because I know for sure if we continue like this it will end, because putting evermore stress on this planets resources. So I think people and companies and governments will have to think about this in the future. We just cannot go on not thinking 5 minutes in front of us. The trend is now to exploit now and don’t think about tomorrow, but the sad part is that tomorrow will someday come and by that time it will already been too late for us.

So in conclusion I think that the main things to think about the future will be the well-being of our planet and of our systems that sustains us, especially the economic system and political ones which are in desperate need of change.
